Description
This popular Florida artist - my husband - has a penchant for Florida's wildlife, palm trees, and especially sunsets. This latest masterpiece - "Hidden Refuge Sunset" - is a consolidation of all three
of those specific scenarios - a united combination - the epitome (Greek - pronounced epidomy) of a Florida wildlife panorama during the twilight hours - a glorious sunset. This Original Oil Painting "Hidden Refuge Sunset" is a beautiful sight to behold - especially for those of us who enjoy relaxing
during those twilight hours in order to perceive - gaze upon - admire - and enjoy the colorful sky as we rivet our eyes upon the rainbow of colors created by the setting sun. Riley has captured this particular
sunset beautifully - the varied layers from the uppermost darker blue - to the lavender - to the red - the
orange - the yellow - to the actual, somewhat lemony brilliance of the sun disappearing beyond the horizon.
Included thereon are a scattering of white alto-stratus clouds - white puffy cumulous clouds - and a few
nimbus. In the far distance we espy a flock of birds returning home for their overnight roost. Claiming
center stage is Riley's faithful, ever-present, Black-headed Gull hovering inquisitively as he surveys the scene below.
In the foreground of the distant grassy plain, we find ourselves in a bird-lovers paradise ... "hidden refuge"
indeed. The star of this scenario is the beautiful Florida Roseate Spoonbill, is one of the most striking birds
found in North America - and especially in Florida. This large wading bird has red legs, red eyes and a
unique grey bill, distinctively spatulate and used as a spoon to strain small food items from the water as it
swings its head back and forth seeking small fish and aquatic invertebrates. The feathers range from
white on the chest area to the stunning pink plumage of the wings. Also approaching this watery feeding
ground, is a Great White Egret (of the heron family) gliding in on silent wings to join his brother feeding in
the shallows in the distance. Against the background of Sabal Cabbage Palms and underbrush, is a "snag" -
the skeletal remains of a dead cypress tree - possibly struck by lightning - forming a perfect nesting site for one of Florida's
ever-popular raptors ... the Osprey, about 2-feet tall with a huge wingspan
of almost 6-feet - has just arrived at the nest.
The colors you see on your computer screen will vary and do not do justice to those in the actual painting which
are bold and beautiful ! This original oil was painted on stretched canvas, was completed in 2009, and was
signed by this artist, R. Geddings.
